Summer skiing
Normally at this time of year, with the weather getting warmer and most people’s thoughts turning to summer holidays, I sadly pack my skiing gear into storage and start counting down the days until autumn. But this year, my skiing buddy and I have decided to do something we’ve talked about for years – summer skiing.
That may sound like an oxymoronic statement, but it’s actually not that difficult to find places to strap on your skis in the summer months – even if global warming does mean these areas are either shrinking in size or beginning to disappear from view altogether. Because if you want to ski in the summer, the only place to do it in Europe is on a glacier!
Glacier skiing has always been popular in the Nordic countries, where the ski resorts are as likely to be busy on an August weekend as they are in December. Actually, they’re likely to be more busy as the ambient temperature in the summer is much more pleasant than the crazy minus numbers they have to cope with in winter! However, Norway is a little out of our price range, both in terms of getting there and the outrageous amounts you have to pay for a beer when you get there…
So we’re going south, to Italy. We’ve got a cheap flight to Lyon in central France in June and then we’re going to hire a car and share the driving to the Breuil-Cervinia area of Italy on the Swiss border. This region is well known for it’s year-round skiing, but is more popular with the locals than tourists; in our experience this usually makes the off piste expenses a lot lower!
