Skiing without the travel hassles

Don’t get me wrong, I love skiing in Europe and my best holiday ever was the two weeks I spent on the slopes in Whistler, but travelling abroad with all your skiing kit can be a real pain in the arse. If you’re not struggling through security with your skis or ski poles smacking everyone around you in the face, then you’re paying extortionate excess baggage fees for the privilege of taking your own property on holiday with you.
There is a solution; skiing in the UK. This winter has been on of the best ever for the Scottish ski resorts of Glenshee and the Cairngorms. Most excitingly, the season is still going strong in March, with all five Scottish ski centres open simultaneously for the the first time in 15 years! It seems there’s never been a better time to go skiing in Scotland. Best of all, you can pile all the skiing kit you like in the back of your car and just drive up there yourself! No packing, no planes, no hassle.
OK, you’re not going to get world-class runs and really experienced skiers may find little to challenge them, but the scenery more than makes up for what the runs lack in excitement and danger. The off-piste activity is very different from what you may be used to in the European ski centres; no Michelin-starred restaurants or wine bars, just cosy local pubs with roaring fires, a scarily large collection of whiskies and some cracking live music. We didn’t get that kind of entertainment in Val d’Isere…
Skiing in Scotland is a great way to experience the sport on a budget too. Not only will you save money on the transport, but you can often find cheap self-catering accommodation in the small towns and villages near the runs. Just make sure the one you hire has central heating. We stayed in a flat once that was heated by gas oil, and it took hours to heat up. Not what you need after a long day on the slopes!
